So, please take note: when you start productizing your business, start small. Think about one area or one type of customer you can target- make a top 10 list of some sort, and then think about how you can use this top 10 list into a slightly bigger product. Then, take that slightly bigger product and expand it further.

When you begin the process of productizing your business, it's natural to feel excited and enthusiastic and ready to take on huge projects in one single leap. However, in productizing, as in life, there is such a thing as taking on too much at one time. I know, first hand, because I'm prone to approach all new tasks this way- I get excited, learn a little about it, and immediately plan an ultra-ambitious project with this newfound knowledge. This way, in my experience, tends to create feelings of frustration and overwhelm- and while I still accomplish these projects, I know I make it more difficult than it has to be. So, please take note: when you start productizing your business, start small. Think about one area or one type of customer you can target- make a top 10 list of some sort, and then think about how you can use this top 10 list into a slightly bigger product. Then, take that slightly bigger product and expand it further. And that take expanded product and take that further. And so on. In doing so, you'll be able to accomplish your product goals and avoid overwhelm at the same time. And now, I'll try to take my own good advice…

When you are thinking about productizing your business, create 2-3 free items you can offer people as lead generators. These might be a free special (short) report, a free teleclass, email newsletter, or e-course. These should all be high value offerings with the lowest barrier to entry- making it easy for people to sign up, join in, and learn about you and your business. When you start with the free items, first, you can create a powerful sales funnel to gradually move people to higher levels of interaction with you and your business.

I've just become a team leader for a teaching program which is bringing more than 100 people together to create a signature product or program in 90 days. The energy and enthusiasm is high and we're all excited to get started. However, what I also see is that a good many of participants have been thinking about making products- for years- but haven't gotten started. For myself, I have several products in the works, but all are only partially completed. If you've been thinking about making products for a while- I encourage you to take 5 minutes, right now, to think about 3 products you'd like to create. Jot this down. And I'll help get you moving through the process to actually convert your list to reality. Stay tuned.

You might have heard that audio messages improve website retention- that means that people who visit your website will tend to stay longer if you have an audio message or clip for them to listen to. These clips are a great way to create a personal connection with your website visitor- and a great place to offer a free sample of your expertise. I already offer audio on one of my niche websites- and I have seen an upsurge of traffic related to this. I'm considering a similar addition to this website, as I expect that will help "get the word out" more quickly. If you have a website, consider adding audio. I am!
