Be sure to draft a written agreement. This will delineate the work to be performed and should include deliverables, payments, and other relevant information. This will be a working document and can grow or change as the position does. Do be sure to put your agreement in writing; and include a means for terminating the working relationship in the future. You’ll be glad for this clause if you ever need to use it.

If you will be hiring someone to work as a part-time or virtual assistant, be sure to create an equitable payment structure. Find a working balance between paying for time v. paying for project. If you pay by the hour, be sure to ask for an accounting of how the time is being spent. If an assistant consistently takes too long to complete a task, consider whether this is a rectifiable situation. Does this person need more guidance? More training? Or would you be better served by working with someone else?

After you’ve interviewed at least 3 potential candidates, your next step is to rank them in terms of likeability, capacity to be a team player, skill set, and whether they are willing to take the job for your desired budget. Price should not be the main consideration. Look for the best balance of all the factors which are important to you. Be sure to check references and ask to see samples of their work (where possible/appropriate.)
